Source Reduction
By not making garbage in the first place you will find that recycling or disposal becomes easier.
"Between 1960 and 2006 the amount of waste each person creates has almost doubled from 2.7 to 4.4 pounds per day. The most effective way to stop this trend is by preventing waste in the first place." - U.S. EPA
Source reduction can be a personal, purchasing, designing and manufacturing practice that reduces the amount of materials used resulting in the savings of natural resources, waste, time and money. It can be as simple as paying attention to what we have and what we need. Source reduction can also be a matter of good planning and making good choices. There is nothing in the practice of source reduction that requires doing without or painful sacrifices.

Cut your garbage output in half - For every pound of waste you eliminate or recycle, you save energy and reduce emissions of CO2 by at least 1 pound. Cutting down your garbage by half of one large trash bag per week saves at least 1100 pounds of CO2 per year. - Powerscorecard.org
