Stormwater Pollution
Small things we do everyday that contribute to water pollution
But we can do a number of simple things on our own properties and in our neighborhoods to reduce or eliminate our contribute to water pollution.
How stormwater pollutes
As we develop the land, we add roads, houses, parking lots, sidewalks, driveways and more to the landscape. These hard surfaces are called impervious surfaces because water can not pass through them as it does through soil so the water is forced to run off. Included in this runoff water are also pollutants such as oil, pesticides, pet waste, chemicals and other toxins that are on the ground.
The water and pollutants flow to sewers that often spill directly into streams and rivers or to treatment plants that can become overwhelmed by the large quantities of water forcing them to dump untreated water into our waterways.
