Improve your gas mileage when you drive

Learn a variety of easy techniques that will improve gas mileage and save money

The way you drive your car will have more effect on the gas mileage than anything else you do.

Accelerating and braking - Accelerating your car requires more horsepower and more fuel so your gas savings depend on how often you stop and how quickly you accelerate. By increasing speed smoothly and evenly and anticipating traffic flow you will reduce starting and stopping and, in turn, conserve fuel. Touch the accelerator pedal lightly and with a continuous motion to get the best results. Reduce excessively hard braking and tapping the brake while in traffic.

Speeding - Speeding, like rapid acceleration and constant braking, wastes gas and disrupts normal traffic flow. Conserving fuel while driving requires driving at a constant speed and driving under 60 mph on the highway. According to U.S. EPA, "You can lower gas mileage by as much as 22% on the highway and 5% on city streets by driving sensibly. Gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Observing the speed limit and using cruise control during highway driving will conserve gas."

Idling - Idling your car for more than 30 sec. to a minute is wasteful. Even if you're standing still you're still burning fuel. When waiting in your car for another person to arrive or at a bank drive-in - shut off your car.

Air conditioning - Using the aiir conditioner does increase fuel consumption. On a hot day use it for a short period of time to reduce humidity and then turn on the vents or crack the windows (not open full) for more fuel saving.
