Getting your hands dirty

There was a time when nearly every large garden was a community garden. People depending on each other for their subsistence and they worked the fields together. People in modern times have used community garden as a way to tie the group, block or neighborhood together and to grow vegetables for participants and as well as needy community members. Community gardens are also a place to have fun, meet new people, visit with friends and try or perfect your hand at gardening.

Community gardens come in the form of school gardens, church gardens, block and neighborhood groups and even office groups. The various types of community gardens include: Allotment gardens where gardeners tend their own plots of usually vegetables, passive gardens that are for the viewing of flowers and passive activities, group gardens or the true community garden where everyone who participates enjoys the harvest and grow food for food panties and the needy.

How to find a community garden near you - If you don't know where a community garden is located or you are new in town it might be hard to locate one near you.
