If you must water your lawn with municipal water

Long, thorough watering is best

If it is really important to you to keep your lawn green throughout the summer then it is important to know how to water your lawn and when to do it.

- Watering your lawn in the early morning will ensure that you lose very little water to evaporation and the lawn will have enough time throughout the day to dry and avoid fungus and other disease growth. If you water in the middle of the day, when the sun is hot, you lose a large quantity of water to evaporation.

- Place a couple of small plastic bowls on the lawn the first couple of times you start watering. Your goal is to get about an inch of water onto the lawn. The bowls will help you tell if you have watered enough. They will also let know if you are watering evenly throughout the yard. This inch of water per week should be enough for your grass to survive and look healthy. If you have sandy soil you might want to break that watering time into two parts as the water will tend to filter through sandy soil more quickly.
