How to find businesses near you

Using the Internet to help you find local businesses

These applications were tested for zip codes and businesses in the local area of our main office. We did this so we could verify the quality of the outcome. We did our search by looking for "grocery store" which is one of the businesses people might be looking for. Contact us with information if you have found other good applications.

Switchboard - By using the "Maps & Directions" tab you can type in your address and the type of business you are looking for and a map will show you all the stores in the vicinity. You can also move the "where" icon to different areas and new business locations will pop up. You can then get driving directions by selecting your start location icon on the map and selecting "start" and then selecting the business destination by selecting "end".

Google Maps - Often the task of finding specific businesses in your area is difficult and does not give you what they are looking for. This application works well if you want to make a number of stops ("Add Destination") or if you want options for driving, public transit or walking. You can also touch on and pick-up portions of the "route" on the map and move it to another street (for the sake of better scenery or other reasons).

MapQuest - Helpful maps but many known locations did not appear. They also add unrelated (probably sponsor paid) businesses on the map which makes it confusing.

Loco Gopher - Works fairly well but is missing many known locations
