Why should we care?
Small and locally-owned businesses are an important part of a city's economy. By keeping money in the local economy residents can take charge of their own economic future. Any time a dollar is spent it has the potential to generate benefits several times its original value.
When you spend your money with national chain stores your money leaves your community and the benefits are limited. But if you spend your money at a locally-owned business your money is more likely to be spent again within your local economy. Local business owners spend a greater percentage of their money on local labor, in local banks and with other local businesses.
Even if you live in a large city you can find local small businesses that offer products and services you use all the time. Sometimes the businesses are close enough to walk to and will work into your exercise plan.
